How to create powerful relationships to gain you clients

Did you ever stop to think how you will be remembered?

If you consider the statement –

“People don’t talk about people, but they talk about the results they leave behind”

If someone was talking about the results you leave behind:

What would that conversation sound like?

Who would be the people having this conversation?

Are they talking about the results you intended to leave behind?

Are these people better off or worse off as a result of having a relationship with you?

Relationships are formed with almost everyone you meet. Just to name a few..


The important aspect of the word relationship is that it needs to be maintained and communication is key.

With this in mind, to have a relationship with someone you must first build the relationship. This is a crucial component in order to excel in your chosen career or business.

The way I see it, there are 2 steps to building a relationship with someone.

1. The initial meeting.
Whether this is done through networking either for business or socially it is important to get out there and meet the right people who are going to get you to where you need to go. And yes first impressions are so important so take a minute to think about how you present yourself the first time you meet someone. Do you go in all guns blazing throwing business cards at everyone you meet or do you relax into the conversation taking a minute to meet the person at where they are at?

2. Maintaining the relationship.
This is the part of the process I see people fall down on time and time again. To build a relationship you must maintain it. I remember back in my corporate 9-5 days one of the best pieces of advice I got was to “door frame” network. That means to literally stop at the doors of colleague’s offices and check in with them every now and again. Sometimes it was work related, sometimes it wasn’t but it helped me maintain the relationship I had with everyone.
If you’re in business today, think about how you maintain your relationships with your customers/clients and potential customers/clients. Social media networking is huge today so it is important to have a strategy and plan prepared on how these platforms can best work for your business.

There are 3 main points to remember when maintaining relationships.

1. Integrity. Very simply never lie or promise anything you cannot deliver.

2. Regular Communication. You want people to remember you, right? You want to be the first person they think of when they need something you provide. Then you have to ensure the communication channels are open and constant in order to stay fresh in people’s heads. If you are in business today this is so easily done via the social media and electronic mail platforms available today. Make sure you are delivering good quality communications and you have a plan in place.

3. Connection. A relationship is a two way street. There must be give and take. I believe the more you give the more you get in return. Helping people and being generous with your time and knowledge can pay dividends. This also helps you connect with a person which is very important.
