Why you will never have a successful business

Be honest here..

How many times in the last few months have you thought about throwing in the towel and giving up on this little business of yours?

I know I have considered it many times over the last few years.

Why?
Very simply – this running your own business thing is bloody hard isn’t it.
It’s long hours, lots of work, rewards are few and far between and the money thing.. well we could talk about it if there was any flippin money.. right!

Until you hit a couple of the nails you need on the head and get into a stride with your business, so it can at least provide the financial support you require – business can be heart breaking!

In the work I do with my clients , and of course from my own experience these are the top reasons you can unknowingly set yourself up for business failure;

1.You don’t see yourself as a business owner.

I find this a lot especially with people who work from home. Sometimes its because a hobby has some-how turned itself into a business and sometimes its because, well, it just doesn’t feel like a buiness. Most of the time this is because financially it is not doing very well, and its hard to see it as a business when money is a problem. But also it can be because you are not acting like a business owner and you are not doing the things you should be doing to get this business of yours to a level you are proud of. Do you have systems and structures in place to support you and your business? What do you have to sell? How do you sell it? When is the last time you asked someone to give you money in exchange for what you have to offer? .. Some food for thought!

2.You are trying to sell too much.

This can be interpreted in two ways;

Firstly, You are trying to sell too much in relation to a “buy from me” attitude. Often when a business is struggling financially, the owner will use social media as a way of gaining clients. BUT when every single one of your posts asks the reader to buy from you, it can be hard to gain clients from this because you have not taken the time to create the know, like and trust factor that is essential on social media so you can form a relationship first. Try moving from helping to selling and you should see and improvement.

Secondly, Being everyone to everybody just does not work. Stop bending over backwards for people offering them the sun, moon and stars in an attempt to secure them as a client. Figure out what you are really good at and what people really seem to want from you. Let your current enquires, clients and past clients guide this for you. There is something that sells better than everything else. Put your focus here. Become known for this. Become the go-to person for this and you will notice that your offerings around this area become more focused, professional and desirable to your audience.

3.You don’t trust yourself to do the things you need to do.

If you take a minute to think about it you know where the problems are in your business, and I’m sure you already know where you are going wrong. So the big question is, Why don’t you trust yourself to do the things you need to do in your business to get it to where it need to go?

You already know where you are holding yourself back, the decisions you have been putting off making.
How much time have you already wasted looking for the answers when they are already inside you?

4.You worry about what other people will say.

This one I can completely relate to! I used to agonise over this one and worry about what people would think of me, about what I was saying and what I was doing. And then one day I thought about the people I was worrying about and I realised that not one of them would be my ideal clients. And there is one important thing to note about that, If they are not my ideal clients, then they are probably not looking for the service I offer or the information I provide, so actually they will probably never see it. So what am I worrying about? The only thing I was doing was stopping my ideal clients from finding me…. now that is something to worry about!

5.You are not clear on what success means to you.

If you have not already done this, take out a blank piece of paper and a pen and write down what success means to you. In other words, “Define Success in Relation to you and Your Business”
Often the word success for you is not attached to money and its not the thing that drives you. Its important to know what success means for you so you will know when you have achieved it. It also gives you a bigger goal to reach for!

6.You let things get to you instead of pushing through.

Unfortunately I need to give you a little bit of bad news here .. This running your own business thing does not get any easier just because the money starts to roll in. There will always be bad days. There will always be things that pop up and knock you off track. There will always be someone waiting to knock you down. But it’s important that you find the strength to push through, face those fears, face those challenges head on and push through. I guarantee it won’t kill you and you will emerge a stronger person and a better business owner.

7.You are spending too much time on the things that will not get you results.

Now it’s time to take a reality check and be really honest with yourself here. What are you actually doing in your business every day? Start tracking the tasks you are completing on a daily basis and notice what you are actually spending your time on. If you are not seeing results in your business then you need to change the way your are spending your time. If you have been spending a lot of time on one thing and you are still not seeing results, maybe you need to re-evaluate and switch direction. How many tasks are you working on that are actual “money making” activities? What needs to change here?

I want you to know that I understand that it can be frustrating to put all the work you are putting in and not get results.

But, don’t worry its not all doom and gloom. There is a very easy way to turn all of this around.

It you can relate to some of the issues highlighted above, all you have to do is change the way you are currently doing things. Push through the challenges, streamline your offerings, get clear on your goals and what success means to you. It all starts with you making a decision right here and now.

Decide that you are going to be a better version of yourself from this moment on. Decide that you can have the business you have always dreamed of. Decide that you are worth it.

I know you can do it, do you?

To your continued success,
Breda
