3 ways to be more innovative in your business

Do you really know what it means to be Innovative?

Where do you start?

Do you know what you want to gain from it and what your result will be?

Well let’s start by looking at the meaning of the word “Innovation”, (taken from Wikipedia)

“Innovation can be seen as the process that renews something that exists and not, as is commonly assumed, the introduction of something new. The central meaning of innovation thus relates to renewal. For this renewal to take place it is necessary for people to change the way they make decisions they must choose to do things differently, make choices outside of their norm…..On a lower level, innovation can be seen as a change in the thought process for doing something, or the useful application of new inventions or discoveries.”

The way I see it, to be innovative is one of the easiest things to do for yourself and/or your business.

Why?

Because, it basically means that all you have to do is change something that is currently not working for you.

This is a great position to be in because you will probably already have the following:

1.A foundation upon which to build on.
2.A tested method that has not worked in the past and, possible feedback.
3.An idea of how to improve the results you are currently getting.

This is a fantastic starting place!

The next step to take can then be easily broken down as follows:

1.Get very clear on the result you want to produce as a result of making this change:
If you are not 100% sure of what you are aiming for then how will you know that the changes you make will be the correct ones?

2.Decide what changes you need to implement:
This is a crucial step. You must decide that these changes need to occur. Remember as said above, it may be necessary for you to change the way you make decisions. You must choose to do things differently, make choices outside of your norm. Have you ever heard the saying “Everything you want is outside of your comfort zone, because if it wasn’t you would already have it”. When the decision has been made then the commitment to make these changes will push you forward.

3.Plan and Implement these changes:
Now it’s time to ensure these changes are implemented. In order to do this you need to include new activities in your daily/weekly plan until you achieve the result you are aiming for.

So where are you in relation to being innovative?

Are you right at the starting point or are you making the decisions of what changes need to be made.

Whatever step you currently find yourself on doesn’t really matter. The main point to remember is that you see it through to the end. Get the result you are aiming for. I’m sure if you look at the big picture this result will have positive effects for others also. All you have to do is make a change!
